On September 16, President Donald Trump posted on X that interest rates in the United States should be 1% or less, arguing that the US has "the best credit in the world — BY FAR." He claimed the country is "BOOMING with new investment" and that if the US stopped trading with every country with which it has a deficit, it would make at least $1.5 trillion a year.

Trump wrote: "The word 'Deficit' is nothing more than a fancy word for LOSS. We are 'carrying' almost every country in the World, and that cannot go on any longer." He ended with a direct call: "LOWER THE INTEREST RATES FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND FAST!"

The statement comes amid ongoing debate over Federal Reserve policy. The current federal funds rate stands at 5.25% to 5.50%. The Fed has not publicly responded to Trump's remarks.
