Northrop Grumman Systems was awarded a $4.8 billion contract to produce Common Infrared Countermeasure, a system used to protect military aircraft from heat-seeking missiles.
The system uses laser fired at an incoming missile to affect guidance systems.
A single bid for the work was solicited and a single bid received, the Pentagon said Tuesday.
Work on the contract will be determined with each order, the Pentagon added.
