Nvidia's chief executive officer, Jensen Huang, has once again championed the arrival of artificial general intelligence, declaring "AGI is here" in response to OpenAI's newest AI model release.
Huang took to social media on Sunday to congratulate OpenAI, noting the rapid evolution of AI systems in just a few short years. "From ChatGPT to o1 to Astra in 4 years," he wrote. "AGI has arrived. Congratulations to the @OpenAI team." The newly launched Astra model, trained using Nvidia's chips, is being touted by OpenAI as the world's "smartest and most aligned model," capable of handling the most demanding professional tasks with unmatched speed, accuracy, and judgment.
During a post-launch conference call with reporters, OpenAI President Greg Brockman welcomed attendees to what he called the "age of AGI."
While the concept of AGI remains loosely defined, it has become a pivotal objective for companies like OpenAI. Google characterizes it as a hypothetical form of machine intelligence capable of understanding or learning any intellectual task that a human can perform, while OpenAI itself defines AGI as "highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work."
Huang's latest assertion follows earlier remarks made in March on the Lex Friedman podcast, where he stated, "I believe we have achieved AGI," though he appeared to somewhat walk back that statement in subsequent interviews, as reported by The Verge.
The industry remains sharply divided on when true AGI might actually materialize. AI pioneer Andrew Ng suggested earlier this year that the field is still decades away from achieving AGI, which he defines as AI capable of performing any intellectual task a human can undertake, from learning to drive a truck to writing a doctoral thesis. Conversely, Tesla CEO Elon Musk offered a different perspective in March, speculating that AGI could arrive via Tesla's Optimus robot.
A commentary piece from PYMNTS in mid-March argued that machines capable of "perceiving, reasoning, and acting in the physical world may offer a more direct path to AGI than software operating within data centers." If this line of reasoning holds, the current push toward physical AI construction represents not merely a manufacturing narrative, but rather the foundational infrastructure for something far larger on the horizon.
