Seoul Greenlights $22 Billion Texas Gas Plant as Premier US Investment Following Trade Accord

South Korea has officially designated a massive natural gas power project in Texas as its inaugural investment initiative under the bilateral trade agreement clinched with the United States last year, according to local media reports. This strategic move is anticipated to ease several months of diplomatic tension between Seoul and Washington concerning the pace and substance of Korea's pledged investment commitments.

Located in the town of Encinal, Texas, the proposed facility represents a substantial $22 billion outlay and is slated to feature a total generating capacity of 6.3 gigawatts. The development blueprint entails an initial phase of constructing 1.4 gigawatts of gas turbine power generation, followed by an expansion that would incorporate an additional 4.9 gigawatts of combined-cycle power units. The project's primary objective is to cater to the surging electricity demands emanating from rapidly expanding artificial intelligence data centers.

For an extended period, the Korean government had withheld the specifics of this venture, reiterating on Monday that no official disclosure would be made until all requisite procedures, including a formal briefing to the National Assembly, have been concluded. However, media sources indicate that Seoul is scheduled to brief its lawmakers on the investment negotiations on September 17th, with a potential signing of a memorandum of understanding as early as September 18th. Furthermore, reports suggest that additional investment candidates under review by Korea include a package of eight large-scale nuclear power plant projects and a separate initiative focused on a liquefied natural gas venture in Alaska.
