Waymo, in collaboration with Nihon Kotsu and GO, has announced a joint agreement to prepare for the commercial launch of its driverless ride-hailing service in Tokyo by 2027.
The timeline, as detailed on Waymo's official blog, is contingent upon securing regulatory approvals and completing ongoing validation of both Waymo's technology and the joint operational program.
Customers will be able to book rides through both the GO and Waymo applications. The fleet is expected to gradually expand to approximately 100 vehicles, covering several key districts across the Japanese capital.
This strategic move marks a significant step in Waymo's international expansion, positioning the company to bring its autonomous driving technology to one of the world's busiest urban transportation markets.
