September 9, U.S. stocks closed lower, with the Dow Jones falling 1.17%, the S&P 500 off 0.58% and the Nasdaq Composite easing 0.32% as profit-taking in blue-chips outweighed strength in select chipmakers. Investors weighed mixed economic signals against rising Treasury yields, leading to defensive positioning ahead of next week’s key inflation data. Energy and industrial shares lagged while pockets of semiconductor optimism helped limit losses on the tech-heavy Nasdaq.

Chip winners topped the session’s action. Intel jumped 9.05% on upbeat AI server demand forecasts, followed by Advanced Micro Devices up 5.90% after unveiling new accelerator roadmaps. Leveraged ETF SOXL gained 5.11% alongside Tesla, which rose 3.94% amid fresh EV tax-credit chatter. Broadcom added 2.98% on strong cloud bookings and Alphabet edged 0.02% higher. On the downside, NVIDIA fell 2.01% as traders locked in gains, Micron Technology slipped 1.61%, Apple lost 1.17% after reports of softer iPhone preorders, and Microsoft dipped 1.15% in sympathy.

Outside mega-caps, moves were wide-ranging. Bloom Energy surged 9.63% on a hydrogen-fuel partnership, Silicon Motion Technology advanced 6.17% on takeover talk, and United Microelectronics climbed 5.06%. Green-tech name Greenland Technologies popped 9.95%, while Planet Green added 2.56%. Losers included crypto-proxy MicroStrategy, which fell 4.40% alongside bitcoin weakness, Chinese e-commerce player PDD Holdings down 2.99%, and Baidu sinking 6.96% amid antitrust scrutiny.
