Media reports from Monday morning indicate a fresh wave of personnel changes within Tencent's artificial intelligence sector. Tian Yonglong has been appointed to the office of Tencent's CEO and President, assuming the role of "Hunyuan Multimodal Lead," and will now report directly to Tencent's head of large language models, Yao Shunyu.
Public records show that Tian completed his undergraduate degree at Tsinghua University and earned a master's from the Multimedia Laboratory (MMLab) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he studied under SenseTime founder Tang Xiao'ou and chief scientist Wang Xiaogang. He subsequently pursued a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following his doctorate, Tian held positions at Google Research, Google DeepMind, and OpenAI before joining Tencent in July 2026 as the head of the Hunyuan multimodal direction, operating under the company's large language model division.
In a notable restructuring on July 24 this year, Tencent merged its Hunyuan multimodal model unit with the large language model department to form a new foundational models division, all managed under chief AI scientist Yao Shunyu. The objective of this reorganization was to enhance development and coordination efficiency while exploring the upper limits of full-modal model intelligence. Reports suggest that Tian became part of this consolidated team, taking charge of the VLM (Vision-Language Model) track.
When contacted for official comment on this development, Tencent had not responded by the time of publication.
