Meituan has officially launched its first low-altitude drone delivery network in Shanghai, marking a significant expansion of its aerial logistics operations. The new network, based in the West Bund area of Xuhui District, is now fully operational, bringing drone delivery services to several key locations across the district.

The service area covers major hubs including West Bund Dream Center, Modu Space, the McDonald's outlet on Longteng Avenue, and the public open spaces along the Xuhui Riverside. This represents Meituan's second comprehensive urban drone network following its initial deployment in Shenzhen, showcasing the company's commitment to scaling its drone delivery infrastructure across major Chinese cities.

Coinciding with the launch, Meituan and McDonald's have introduced their first-ever exclusive drone delivery route for a restaurant brand in China. Through purpose-built pickup and delivery equipment, designated flight paths, and an innovative service model, McDonald's has effectively extended its service reach well beyond its physical stores to encompass sports and leisure zones, riverside dining areas, and outdoor social spaces within a multi-kilometer radius.

According to Meituan's drone division, Shanghai is a key focal point for expanding its drone delivery network on a larger scale. The West Bund network serves as the initial step, with plans already underway to develop additional drone networks in other districts of the city. The company's vision is to transform low-altitude delivery from a novelty experience into a routine service, expanding coverage from individual districts to the entire city.

The Shanghai West Bund network is strategically positioned around central nodes such as the West Bund Dream Center, Xuhui Riverside Public Open Space, Modu Space Xingyun No.1, and the plaza fronting McDonald's Longteng Avenue location. These hubs represent typical urban environments, including commercial complexes, office districts, and public parks, demonstrating the versatility of drone delivery in diverse city settings.

Currently, nearly 20 chain restaurant brands have signed up to support drone food delivery, including well-known names like McDonald's, A Mu Shou Zuo, and M Stand. These partnerships offer hundreds of different products for aerial delivery, with expectations to expand to over 40 brands within the year.

The drone delivery process is notably faster and more efficient than traditional ground courier services, largely because it bypasses the complexities of surface traffic. When a customer places an order, a courier stationed at the restaurant transports the meal to the nearest Meituan drone smart docking station, where automated robotic arms handle the loading and unloading of packages. Simultaneously, a drone receives the dispatch command and flies to the designated station, retrieves the food, and follows a pre-planned route to its destination. The entire operation can be completed in as little as ten minutes.

Public records show that Meituan first began exploring low-altitude delivery in 2017. Since then, the company has launched logistics services in multiple cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and even Dubai, accumulating over one million commercial orders to date.

A senior representative from Meituan's drone division emphasized the company's commitment to opening up its low-altitude delivery capabilities to the broader industry. The goal is to collaborate with partners in building a new urban logistics infrastructure for low-altitude operations. The company plans to continue investing substantial resources to create a faster and more convenient drone delivery network, with the ultimate aim of making drone deliveries a standard part of daily life for Shanghai residents in the near future.
